Saint-Germain-en-Laye was classified as a 'station climatique' and became known as 'Mountain of good air' and is a perfect place to live with its successful combinations of old and new, town and nature. Its treasures include the famous terraces built by Le Nôtre that overlook the Seine valley, the 3500 hectares of national forest, the Château Vieux which is home to the Musée des Antiquités Nationales… Famous characters have been born , stayed or lived here : Ronsard, Madame de Sévigné, Molière, Dumas father and son, Mozart and of course Debussy.
The town also welcomes the PSG football team and has an annual Fête des Loges (in July with 3 millions visitors).
With 850 shops mainly in the town centre, Saint-Germain-en-Laye can proudly proclaim to be the 'largest open air shopping centre in Ile-de-France'. It also has the record for education in France with 11 nursery schools, 9 elementary schools and an international secondary school which is the only one of its sort because it teaches in 11 languages - which explains why the town is host to the head offices of numerous international companies.
